NSW Cancer Clinical Trial statistics

NSW clinical trial activity data are self-reported to the Cancer Institute NSW by clinical trial units (CTUs) participating in the Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Trials Program. 

Clinical trial data included in the dashboard represents prospective, interventional cancer clinical trials in NSW, and exclude observational clinical research. 

There are over 80 CTUs across NSW representing Local Health Districts, specialty health networks and private/non-government institutions reporting their enrolments through the Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Trials Portal (the Portal).

Data sources

Enrolment data are sourced from the Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Trials Portal (the Portal). Incidence and remoteness data

• are sourced from the NSW Cancer Registry, Cancer Institute NSW, the Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Trials Portal and Australian Bureau of Statistics Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). 
• all private/non-government institutions, specialty networks, and children's hospitals are grouped in the local health district in which they reside.

Clinical trial units

Enrolments are reported by clinical trial units and departments located at regional and rural NSW Local Health Districts, specialty networks, affiliated health organisations and private/non-government institutions. Enrolments at private/non-government institutions are presented either under a Local Health District or independently under ‘Private/non-government NEC’ (not elsewhere classified), depending on agreements with the Cancer Institute NSW.

Enrolment data

Enrolment data include enrolments to all prospective, interventional cancer clinical trials. Excludes observation clinical research, registries, tissue banks and all screen failures. 

Enrolments only include NSW residents and not residents from other states who may travel to NSW to participate in clinical trials. 

Individuals enrolled in more than one cancer clinical trial are counted for each enrolment.  

Data may be updated in the Portal at any time, and updates are reflected in the Dashboard when the dashboard is refreshed by the Cancer Institute NSW.
