World Cancer Day 2020

2020 marks the 20th anniversary of World Cancer Day.

It is a time to ignite action – working together to reduce of unnecessary cancer deaths and to achieve equal access to cancer care for all.

This year's theme is I Am And I Will. It is an empowering call-to-action, urging for personal commitment and representing the power of individual action taken now to impact the future.

I will take control of my cancer care

Finding out you have cancer can be confronting and stressful. You might not know what to do or who to turn to.

This World Cancer Day, the Cancer Insitute NSW is empowering people with cancer to ask questions and get the right care.

It is a four-point guide to help you have conversations with your doctor, and ultimately help you manage your cancer care.

  • Team – Have your care overseen by a multidisciplinary cancer care team.
  • Involvement – Be informed and get involved in decisions about your care.
  • Plan – Know the next step in your treatment and who to contact.
  • Support – Know the people and services available to support you.

See the full resources, now available in eight languages.

I am screening for cancer

Cancer screening can help detect cancers early, improving outcomes for people across NSW, but more people need to take part – especially in multicultural communities.

The Cancer Institute NSW has developed new resources to empower local communities and improve cancer outcomes across the state.

'What is cancer screening?' explains bowel, breast and cervical screening in easy-to-understand terms, and it is now available in 15 languages.

This World Cancer Day we're encouraging everyone to commit to learning about cancer screening, supporting others, and doing the tests themselves.

How will you mark World Cancer Day 2020?

Everybody will recognise the day in their own personal way.

It could be a personal commitment to take part in cancer screening or live a healthier lifestyle. It could be an opportunity to reach out to a loved one or friend who has been impacted by cancer. Or it could just be a great time to show your support on social media.

Events are also happening across NSW and Australia – find one near you.
